dugodug productions is the result of a creative collaboration between dancers Doug Mackie (Oregon) and Cindy Severt (California) who met -- accidentally, or by fate -- on stage in Wisconsin. This chance encounter, and a mutual desire to develop original projects led to the production of their first full evening work, Precipice. Applying a background in standard musical theatre to experimental works has resulted in their eclectic brand of theatre/dance choreography, and has them sought by and drawn to projects of a socio/political/alternative nature.
The Explorer: Doug Mackie
Originally from Portland, Oregon, Doug was a principal dancer with Eugene Ballet for 10 years performing memorable roles as The Raven, Petrushka, Puck, The Beast, Mercutio, Pulcinella, Der Damon, and Hillarion opposite guest artists Fernando Bujones and Kimberly Glasco. Doug made 3 international tours to Taiwan and Japan, as well as touring throughout the Pacific Northwest with numerous dance companies. His theatre credits include the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Eugene Festival of Musical Theatre, Young Audiences of Oregon, Taproot, Eugene Opera, Southern Oregon Light Opera, and Crystal Egg Theatre. Since moving to Wisconsin in 1996, he has worked for the Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival, the Heartland Festival, and CTM Madison Family Theatre where his choreography for South Pacific starring Tom Wopat, and The King & I starring Kitt-Reuter Foss received critical acclaim. Doug earned his MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Collaborating with Cindy Severt, his first full-length work Precipice debuted at the Grand Opera House in Dubuque in 2003.
The Trickster: Cindy Severt
Never the ingénue, always the other woman, Cindy’s specialty dance roles range from the sublime – an Angel in the world premiere of the rock opera Everyman, to the ridiculous: a unicorn in toe shoes for an original British pantomime – and everything in between including Follies on Broadway (Greg Thompson Productions), Sheila (A Chorus Line), Katalin Hunyak (Chicago), Lina Darling (Nine), Tintinabula (Funny Thing/Forum), Liat (South Pacific), Tessie Tura (Gypsy), Eliza (King & I), and featured Tango specialties in Evita, Jekyll & Hyde, The Boyfriend . Cindy has also danced specialty roles for the Guthrie’s Romeo & Juliet, A Christmas Carol, and the Minnesota Opera’s Kiss Me Kate. She was a recent guest artist in Madison Ballet’s Cinderella, and Oregon Symphony’s production of Camelot. Not limited to dance, Cindy also created the original roles of Martha Windy and Charlene Snoop in Dead Write Productions’ interactive murder mysteries Death & Taxes and Chance of a Ghost. As part of the creative team of dugodug productions she co-choreographed and performed in the world premiere of Precipice, an original dance/theatre production about passion, desire, and a chocolate Tango.
The Other Trickster: Gregory Grube
Gregory Grube is a 30 year old artistic adventurer, currently pursuing a degree in dance from the University of Wisconsin -- Madison. A native Delawarean, he began his exploration of the Mid-West at 18 when he made his first trip to Chicago, moving to Madison in 1997 immediately after completing his first undergraduate degree from the University of Delaware: a B.A. in English and Art History. Since then, Gregory has made pilgrimages to most major American cities, traveled six times to Europe, written hundreds of poems, danced thousands of hours, and has even ventured into the workplace on occasion. Unquenchably passionate about dance, this is his first official performance at an event such as The Minnesota Fringe Festival, and thanks Cindy and Doug for seeking him out and allowing him to partake of this experience.
The Aerialist: Disa Carneol
Disa is a 17 year old aerialist, stilt-walker, zero-wind kite flyer and actress from Madison, Wisconsin. She fell in love with the stage during her first performance at age 2, and has been practicing single-point aerial dance since age 10, along with her mother Spyder. Disa has performed at a wide variety of venues, including the Green Bay Packers fan appreciation day at Lambeau Field, the world renown Kites on Ice festival, The String Cheese Incident fall 2004 concert, and the opening celebrations of the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison. Her two claims to fame are having survived a mile-long stilt walking parade in a thunderstorm, and falling asleep on the lyra (aerial hoop) that hangs in her living room (and not falling off!).
The Ballerina: Kersten Rowley
Kersten Rowley, a dancer since age 3, has had instruction in classic Russian and Vaganova ballet, tap, salsa, swing, African, jazz, modern, Israeli, Indian, Greek, liturgical, character, folk, mime, and Irish step dancing. She has performed in 11 full-length ballets, 11 musicals, 4 operas, and has choreographed 2 musicals. Her favorite roles include Sugar Plum Fairy in The Nutcracker, Chava in Fiddler on the Roof, Principal Swan in Swan Lake, Emma Livry in The Golden Glow, and Mitzi in Crazy For You. She recently attended the Pre-Professional Summer Dance Intensive with the Milwaukee Ballet School as a scholarship winner and was a featured soloist in the final performance, Emergence. She currently holds the title of 2005 Teen Miss Maquoketa River. Kersten will be a senior at Dubuque Senior High this fall. She wishes to thank Doug and Cindy for sharing this Trapped adventure with her.
